Creating paths to share perspectives, build and engage communities, and shape our collective future together

About us

Founded in 1931, the Vancouver Art Gallery is recognized as one of the most respected and innovative visual arts institutions in Canada and is committed to strengthening ties between artists and diverse communities throughout the city, province, and beyond. As the largest public art museum in Western Canada, the Gallery features the work of ground-breaking contemporary artists from around the world, presents historical art of international significance, and provides a global platform for British Columbia’s dynamic artistic community, including the work of First Nation artists as well as art of the Asia Pacific. Its growing collection represents the most comprehensive resource for art in British Columbia and is the principal repository for visual art produced in the region, as well as related works by other notable Canadian and international artists. The Gallery also places an emphasis on advancing scholarship through major publications and presents a multitude of public programs that offer new ways to consider art for visitors who come from throughout the region and internationally. In response to the significant growth in collections, exhibitions and attendance over the past decade, the Gallery announced in 2014 the selection of Herzog & de Meuron for the design of a new and expanded home in downtown Vancouver. The new facility will double the Gallery’s current size and will be a vital catalyst to Vancouver, enhancing the city’s cultural community and serving as a centre for cross-cultural dialogue and exchange in the visual arts. The Vancouver Art Gallery is a not-for-profit organization supported by its members, individual donors, corporate funders, foundations, the City of Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia through the BC Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Final weeks! “J.E.H. Macdonald? A Tangled Garden” closes on May 12, 2024.     The Group of Seven are among Canada’s most acclaimed and historically celebrated Modern artists, known primarily for their role in building a narrative of Canada’s national identity in the early 20th century.    J.E.H. MacDonald was a founding member of the Group, so, to provide a broader context for his work, the exhibition features a selection of securely attributed oil sketches by the Group of Seven, drawn from the Gallery’s permanent collection.     These oil sketches, appreciated for their freshness, energy and vibrant colours, offer a glimpse into the artistic process of the Group’s members, who often created preliminary painted sketches in the field before completing larger, finished paintings in their studios.    Visit us to test your eye and discover a fascinating glimpse into the world of art history! Book tickets at https://bit.ly/4arVQZP.    Image: Frederick Horsman Varley, “Dawn,” c. 1929, oil on panel, Vancouver Art Gallery Acquisition Fund, VAG 86.193

Opening on May 12, “Copy Machine Manifestos: Artists Who Make Zines” is the first exhibition dedicated to the rich history of artists’ zines produced since the 1970s. Organized by the @brooklynmuseum, “Copy Machine Manifestos” features almost 1,000 zines and artworks by over 100 artists, demonstrating the importance of zines to artistic production across North America. 🤔 But what is a zine?  📓 A zine—short for fanzine (or sometimes magazine)—is generally defined as a quickly produced, low-cost publication intended for relatively limited distribution. As @guardian writes in their review of the exhibition: “Requiring little more to produce than a copy machine, a stapler and a vision, zines played a hugely democratizing role in art during the 20th century and have managed to stay popular and relevant in spite of web-based innovations, like blogs, that might have supplanted a less compelling medium.” 📍 Visit the Gallery from May 12 to September 22, 2024, to learn more! Plan your visit at https://lnkd.in/gnfjNK8d. Please note that this exhibition contains mature content. Viewer discretion is advised. The exhibition “Rooted Here: Woven From the Land” celebrates the work of four prominent local Salish weavers, who have been instrumental in the revival and perpetuation of weaving in their communities. A large part of that revival and renewal has involved teaching others.     🗣️ Art Exchange student Victoria, 15, was inspired by this theme of apprenticeship and the idea of passing down an art form through relations and generations. Listen to her explain how she used unconventional materials to create a beautiful necklace under the guidance of her father, who is a goldsmith.     “I find it aspirational how the art of Salish weaving was revived from nearly going extinct. One weaver turning into hundreds through what captures the humane in art, the relationship between a mentor and an apprentice, passing down an art through relations and generations. And so, I did the same, where my dad was the mentor, and I was the apprentice. I learned how to pull wire, hammer, solder, and polish, all for the first time through his thoughtful guidance. This is the first piece of jewelry I ever created, and it reminds me of how my dad, a master goldsmith, was once in my same spot decades ago. He started his apprenticeship for goldsmithing back in Hong Kong when he was 17, where it provided a life for him up until now. I want this piece to be a testament that beauty can be found in everything if we just pay attention, rather than disregard it out of ignorance.” —Victoria, Artist Statement, April 2024    Find out more about this exciting program at https://bit.ly/4b85nFd.    Artwork: Art Exchange Student Victoria, “WOVEN FROM THE LAND(FILL),” 2024, Recycled copper wire, Courtesy of the Artist Arts Umbrella
